The simplest definition is its name. The word
Biodanza consists of the prefix Bio (from Bios
life
) and Danza (French, an
integrated movement full of meaning
). Put
together, these two parts define Biodanza as The
Dance of Life.
Rolando Toro provides a more formal academic
definition: A system of affective integration,
organic renovation and relearning of the original
life functions, based on Vivencias induced by dance,
singing and encounter situations in a group
.
The Theoretical Model was developed by Rolando Toro in order to provide a theoretical framework to the practice of Biodanza. It is a map which represents reality and can be used to ask questions about reality.
Rolando Toro has proposed the hypothesis that there is a Vital Unconscious - a biological mind that not only spans the individual or a certain species but also participates as a guiding force in the ocean of life.
The Biocentric Principle, as proposed by Rolando Toro, is the key foundation of the theory of Biodanza. It can be stated simply as Life is Sacred and the starting point is the Vivencia of a universe based on life.
The concept of the Vivencia was proposed around 100 years ago by William Dilthey, who defined it as the lived instant. It can also be thought of as the present moment lived fully.
